Mismatch day costume

As promised here is Adi’s costume for mismatch day. I can’t believe we really did this looking at the costume now just after two days.. At her summer camp they visit nearby public library every Wednesday and this Wednesday being mismatch day the bravo kids marched to the library in mismatch costume. I asked Adi “how did you guys do this? didn’t people on the streets look  stare at you guys? She cooly said “it was okay. just that few people were laughing at us as we looked so silly and funny” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and this is the white t-shirt the kids designed self to wear for the talent show

I asked her so pappa who won the talent show?

Her response was (No editing – not even a single word)

“What do you mean who won?  Each kid had their own talent and everyone did the best they could so it wouldn’t be fair if one kid gets to win. We all won in our own talents)…  I was amazed at the way the teacher handled this…

Spirit Week

This week theme at Adi’s summer camp is Spirit week.

Monday was Crazy hat day – We made this hat last weekend inspired from here. The tiara on top and the chenille stem swirls are Adi’s original ideas (as she claimed 🙂 ).. multi-color construction papers and beads are my suggestions. She was kind enough to accept my suggestion 😉  Also instead of paper plate we used foam plate just for the simple reason that we only had foam plates at home…

does this qualify for this month’s artsy craftsy theme? I am linking it…

Tuesday – Pajama day – Kids wore pajama and took blanket with them.  They had lunch in bed. Also, today they designed their own white t-shirts to wear for the talent show.

Wednesday – Mismatch day – Will post pics tomorrow. Adi is planning to wear different color shoes and socks. I have some ideas. Let’s see..

Thursday – Talent show – She picked jump roping and is practicing hard for that… Her first choice was singing and dancing but one of her friend already picked it and since the talent has to be unique our girl picked jump roping (very unique talent right?).. After talent show they will have pizza party.

Friday – As any other regular Friday with a visit to nearby park to enjoy sprinklers.

Just for smile – 15

at the cost of me people (as always !!!!)

Scene: I am at kitchen in the middle of cooking and Adi at living room watching the idiot box
Time: On a typical tiring evening after a long day

Me: (for the hundredth time in literally begging tone) Paapppaa can you please come here and do your writing?
Adi: Okay I know you will say NO but but I really want to play for a while in laptop first.
Me: (gave up) do whatever you wish.. don’t ask me anything anymore…
Adi: Oookkaaayyyy what should I write for today?
Me: (with some hope again..) do this Math addition sheet (two digits addition with no carrying)
Adi: OMG two digits addition? Am I not supposed to do this in 2nd grade?
Me:  gives a big lecture about carry and no carry and end of it succeeds in convincing her that addition of any digit with no carry is not a big deal (Sigh did my mom do this? convincing me for every single thing in this whole world? just a spank  stare would do. I was such a good girl you know..)
Adi: Alright Mommy. I got it. Now don’t mess me up. I will do them by myself.
(after completing three in a row)
Adi: Mommy is 31+31 equals 62?
Me: Can you please check again and tell me if it is right or wrong?
Adi: IT IS 62. don’t you know?
Me: (to encourage her to do more) I am trying to learn from you pappa

Now comes the laughing part

Adi:  Oh my gosh!!!!!!!! can there be a parent not knowing a simple two digit addition and trying to learn from their child? I can’t believe this !!!!!!!!!

I was about to add three more spoons of chilli powder to the cauliflower (gritting my teeth all along).. you know how it feels don’t you?

6th grade achiever + 2nd grade achiever = Kindergarten achiever???

Yippppppeeee….

Adi achieved it.  The one that I learned at 6th grade with my dad and brother beside me for months and M learned all by himself (as he claims proudly) at 2nd grade. She learned it in just few hours. Her safety measures and fear factor vanished just like that when she got the grip.

Wanna guess what it is before scrolling further to watch the video?

Presenting a proud moment..

Longwood gardens and Hershey visit

I admit this post is late again but I am not a never person.. Multiple attempts were made to draft this post and I didn’t know till today evening that today is the day to hit the publish.

On 4th of July long weekend we were out of the nest for two days on a trip to next state.

Day one – The journey started at 8 am and we drove to Longwood gardens with one service area stop and more importantly not missing the route.  Not so late but just when we were 100 miles away from home M had a light bulb moment and remembered that he left his backpack at home.. the bag that had all reservation e-tickets printout and his laptop.  whatz the fun if everything goes as planned huh? Without wasting a second my smart dumb mind started recalculating as how long it will take to go back home when M suggested to call the toll free number of the places (I had these numbers just in case if we were lost) we planned to visit and check if we can manage without the physical copy of tickets.. they all agreed to reprint the tickets at their facility.. may be they would have seen smarter people than us in their past experience 🙂  okay back to the trip we reached gardens half past 12 and other families joined us shortly after that. We were a total of four families each with one kid all toddlers with us having the eldest.  Do I already have a 6 year old?  time is flying..  We all had lunch at garden restaurant, roamed around the garden till 3pm and then saved our spot with chairs for the fireworks show scheduled at 9:15 pm the same day for which we had already reserved tickets.  Patriotic people were standing in line with chairs from 1pm….

water fountain show at open air theater (please to ignore me talking non stop 🙂 )

What to do between 3:30pm to 8:30pm? So we checked in to hotel, relaxed for a while and then came back to the gardens at around 8:30 pm for the fireworks show.  The show was jaw dropping. It had 3D effect and Adi was crying non-stop for first 5 minutes. She was like “I want to go home right now..” but the same girl in next 45 mins when the fireworks were over asked “Can I see more? when is the next one?”.. that was the magic.. Had dinner on the way back and reached hotel at midnight. how could we drive with not a single miss so we did miss a right turn and drove another 20 minutes to come back to the turn..

fireworks – listen to her crying from 4:00 to 4:20

Day two – Started the day with complimentary breakfast at the hotel and drove to Hershey’s chocolate world.  It was a pleasant drive on country side full of farms (mostly corn farm fields) on either side.. At some intersections tonga’s waited along with us for signal 🙂 . Reached Hershey’s around 12pm and spent time over there till evening. We took a fun trolley ride around the town, watched a 3D chocolate show (Adi was literally jumping to catch the chocolates), was part of different kinds of chocolate tasting adventure, packaged our own kisses chocolate box and finally bought loads and loads of chocolates enough for next two months if was gobbled at the rate of two per day…

Reluctantly we said bye bye to the chocolate world in the evening with mouthful of chocolates and drove back home…

this post took a new turn

This post was supposed to be a lighter one teasing the big hue and cry Adi was making about the nail scratch in her hand early this week like don’t touch it, I don’t want to bath with this boo boo, do I need a band aid?, I am not able to lift my hand, can you feed me today? … I even took a picture of that nail scratch but not in a mood to upload it as  yesterday the girl returned home with a bigger one .. multiple scratches in her face..  She and her friend ran towards the water fountain and in that race this girl fell down flat with her face hitting the ground resulting in scratches on one side of her face on cheek, nose, lips, chin and chest..  when I went to pick-up she was standing there alone with a wet tissue covering one side of her face. That moment I knew she got hurt and without noticing anyone on the way I was literally running towards her to take off the tissue and see the details.  The scratches are minor and she should be alright in couple of days but what bothers me is why didn’t she protect her face with hand? M says she lacks that reflexive action like him. Is that true? I guess kids or any human use their hands as first weapon to protect.  I have seen kids hurting their hand or knees.  Is it common to hurt their face without hurting  hand or knee?  The same incident happened few years back. It is the same place of the cheek that is hurt now.. Accident like these happens but I am telling you it is very hard to accept…

Her first question after I picked up was can I go to school tomorrow? She wanted to go as the summer camp’s this week theme is “Holiday week” and today they are having a Halloween costume contest. She has been planning for this day for more than a week now.  I just replied with my usual “Let’s see”. She was very upset and I was more upset than her.  The moment I see her face to face my eyes well up. Later I consoled her rather myself by saying “I will do anything she wants today”..  guess this little devil’s response? she wanted to do a TV marathon. I agreed. she knows me better huh? The first thing she did after reaching home is see her face in mirror.  It was tough to see her.  She refused to join me to the library as she didn’t want to show her boo boo to anyone.  The day ended with applying Betnovate, more TV and she got all that she asked for that minor nail scratch…

Today morning one of the wiggly tooth at bottom row fell off but she was okay with it as it was due to fall for quite some time.  She was feeling better and we left the option of going to school to her.  She choose to go. So, she is at school now with the Halloween costume and I am here with the mommy guilt. Did she get hurt because I was teasing her with that minor nail scratch? Anyways I am planning to pick her up early today and pamper her for rest of the day… We might even skip the annual corporate family picnic this weekend. I don’t want to take her to the crowd if she is not comfortable.. poor girl.. this is not the way I wanted her summer to be but we have no option … 😦

3 in 1 birthday post

First and foremost a very happy birthday to sweet aunty – Hephzibah’s mom. She is turning 65 on July 17th.

Though I met you recently and we have talked very little on those visits I was able to feel the warmth and care you hold for everyone around especially for your grand children. Here we are all wishing you a blasting birthday and great year ahead. Have a wonderful day aunty. I am sure Hephzibah and grand children will make your day the best. Enjoy your day and pass on some cakes if there are any leftovers 😉

Second yeah it is second birthday of Shruti’s blog.  Without this blog what would I have done to engage my five year old then?  I love this blog and not to mention the blog author too 😉 for all her ideas and creativity. Way to go and keep up the good work Shruti.. Your blog had definitely played a vital role in developing Adi’s interest in arts and crafts.  Thank you so much for all that..

Click on this image to visit Shruti’s blog (there is chance to win a gift people)…

And last but not the least my blog also joins this celebration post to celebrate its second birthday.  This blog mirrors my parenthood and hope it will be cherished by Adi during her days.. Hoping to keep it alive till then.. Though the blog world stoles away some of my daily time the returns are remarkable.  I could see and feel the  shift in self. Without this blog I would not have met wonderful people like you all especially people like Swaram who are so inspirational and optimistic in all they do.  Thanks to you all my blog friends for supporting me to keep this blog alive.. Thanks again..

Quick Snack

No I am not on a cooking spree. It was an all of a sudden attempt as the pastry sheets were lying on freezer for a while now.

Adi preferred Egg puff over Veg puff and asked me to make bake them again.

When I asked her that night did you like the puff pappa? her response was “why would I say no to it?”…

It takes a while for my brain to decipher her response these days. why can’t she reply with a plain “yes” for above question?

Vegetable/Egg Puff

Puff Pastry sheets (I bought the ready-to-bake ones)
Eggs or Finely cut vegetables of your choice (I used carrots/beans/peas/corn/potato cubes) – 1 cup
Fennel seeds – 1 teaspoon
Onion – 1
Ginger garlic paste – 1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Chilli powder – 3/4 teaspoon or as per your taste
Garam masala powder – 1/2 teaspoon (Optional. I did not use it)
Salt – as required

1. Thaw pastry sheets at room temperature for about 30 mins
2. Saute fennel seeds, onion, ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, chilli powder, salt in same order
3. Add vegetables
4. Add a pinch of garam masala powder when vegetables are half cooked (don’t add water as the stuffing has to be dry).
5. Press the pastry sheets gently to 1/4 thickness on a floured counter top.
6. Cut them into rectangle shape so stuffings can be kept on one side and pastry sheet can be closed like folding a notebook.
7. Apply beaten egg on edges (before folding) and on top of pastry sheet (this is for bonding and crispiness).
8. Bake at 400 degree for 15 mins or until the puff turns golden brown.

P.S: For Egg Stuffing boil eggs for 15 minutes (have seen people boiling for 10 mins but Adi hates it even if a small portion of yolk is not fully cooked so I prefer 15 mins) and add them to the sauteed mix.  Cut the egg into half and place it along with sauteed mix inside pastry sheet.
