My little drummer – Day 57/7

I forced myself into resting mode today as workday/school routine begins tomorrow and its then going to be just running behind schedules. I am going to go to workplace after almost 2.5 weeks (boarding two trains, running to station to catch the train that’s about to leave in 2 minutes, eat from my dabba, random chit chat with colleagues, drink hot water from my bottle, gulp down countless number of hot flavored tea and above all braving this weather!! Sighhh!! I digress!!!!

So, today is a video/picture post to save some time from writing.

My little drummer (drums made from cardboard boxes and kitchen plate). He calls this song a “sugar song”. His favorite TV time pass has changed from cartoons to watching songs back to back and dance along 🙂

Adi’s recent random art during snow day. She says she messed it up but I liked it!

Musical jigsaw puzzle by Adi’s piano teacher (She said it took one whole day to do this and this is her way to destress). I should try this someday with the kids a 1000 piece puzzle. An apt display for her living room.

Adi’s poem

Prompt was to write about some object that has a special meaning.

She wrote about the package I received from my work when LHB was sick last year.

Ode to my brother’s stuffed bear

My brother’s stuffed bear is important and unique,
It made my brother grin after 6 weeks,
With smears of chocolate all over his face,
And it all started one rainy day,
My soggy cereal was waiting untouched,
The doorbell rang and I got up,
I opened the door and was surprised to see,
There was nothing there but a package and me,
I called my mom and opened the note,
It said it was from my mom’s office and inside was the tote,
There was a balloon, a bear, some chocolate and more,
And I saw this all when I opened door,
The bear was very furry and smooth,
All I knew was that we would be moved,
When I gave it to him, he smiled with glee,
And my mom walked in with a cup of tea,
The bear had brightened my brother’s day,
The bear smiled at my brother like a blue jay,
A tiny little thing brought such joy,
To my brother though he is as little as a toy.

Adi’s artwork

Her recent works.. Summer well spent 🙂 School is starting in two days and I am not sure when she will be able to spend so much time on art again. Each picture took her more than two hours. Please click on each picture for enlarged view.

Summer 2014

What are we up to this summer?

Adi can now solve cube (inspired from Amma. She has been eyeing it ever since I solved it last year and have got to it finally). I have to admit that Adi solves it better than me.. She learned it in 3 days.

She is practicing the carnatic songs she learns from pattu class in piano. She has been doing this out of her own interest and getting pretty good at it.

She is part of Fizz Boom summer reading club at local library. Not making great progress but reading whenever she gets time in-between other craziness.

She wants to put-up a lemonade stand but I am still fiddling on that idea. I mean I need cooler, crushed ice, pitcher, table.. Ok forget it for this summer is all I say to myself every time I think of it but there is still tiny little hope. Let’s see.

She is going to hang out for a day with two of her friends from school this weekend.

She has a journal but writes only when bored or when reminded of its existence.

She is having a very good time at the summer fun program organized by the mayor for our city residents. They take them to pool, bowling and field trips.

I should say this is her best summer of all years. A visit to beach and couple of other places would make it perfect.

Jana gana mana on piano

Played by the little girl. She played this at Talend show at her school on Children’s day. Video was recorded on that day morning while practicing. Please ignore the milk cooker whistle and the little fella’s excitement.

PS 1 – I will soon write about the two recent meet with fellow bloggers. It was beyond awesome and I was so glad to be part of both of meets. Finally, I attended a blogger meet too **all teeth** yayyyyyy!!!!!!

PS 2 – I am not able to login to my reader these days. It has been more than two months. I sincerely apologize to all the bloggers whom I used to visit regularly and mark my presence. I hope to soon get back to it.

final output with colors 🙂

Which one do you like?

She owns a drawing pad and is “practicing to be perfect” (those were words from her) as she wants to become an artist when she grows up. This is as of April 2012.  I am recording the month and year as in March 2012 she wanted to be a dancer, in Feb 2012 she wanted to be a doctor and so on.  Now you know why I have planned her birthday theme to be based on arts and crafts..

Updates updates updates

Update 1 – Last Friday the assembly at Adi’s school was conducted by first graders. The assembly theme will be in line with school’s theme for that academic year.  This year theme is “Made in America”. The kids from first grade sang/danced for few songs and performed sign language for a song. Girls were asked to wear red dress for the occasion. Though I had a simple backup red dress my hunt for a better dress didn’t stop until we found a beautiful one just two days before the show. Needless to say the kids performed amazingly excellent 🙂

The show was from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. I took permission from work and reached her school early and spent some time at her class with all kids. I read the book “How Ganesh got his elephant head?” to them and there was so many questions about the story. I politely skipped most of the questions.. What can I do? I was helpless with questions like Is this a real story? Why did God take off the little boy’s head? Isn’t he supposed to save us? Does Shiva have the serpents on his neck even while sleeping? Why does Brahma alone has four heads?

do you pity me now? 😦

Update 2 – Adi had started semi-private swimming lessons from last week. She and a boy of her age are having the classes with an instructor.  The first session went on for one hour and she learned blowing bubbles and breathing techniques that she is lagging. The instructor was awesome. He taught this technique using a game by name “Submarine”.. That is to see whose head stays inside water for longer time.. Adi is improving but just that one class was enough for me to realize that private lessons are way better than group lessons in terms of learning.. I will post the progress after few months.

Update 3 – Last week we had report card night for first quarter. She got the lowest grade in Math. I couldn’t believe my eyes.. A product of two Math majors (Is this why they say “vaathiyaar pillai makku?” (Eng: Teacher’s kid will be brainless).  To be honest both of us were a little upset but we didn’t show it to her. The feedback from her teacher on Math is that she has a race with one more kid to finish first and in that hurry she misses to read last line of the question or misunderstands the question…   Its not that she doesn’t know its the concentration and review that is lagging. May be over confidence too… that “I know I know I know” attitude :(.. I spoke with her gently about this and she agreed to improve in next quarter. All that I told her was “Its okay if you don’t know but please don’t mess up with what you know”… What can you say when a girl who can do 54+15 with ease messes up with “5+ 3 as 7” and justifies that she thought it is 5+2…

Overall feedback was the same as K-grade. It says “She is an excellent kid but her social nature is challenging her ability to finish her own task” that means “She is off to help her friends in need to finish their task before she is done with her own task”.. Enough ranted about the report card. Let’s see the progress in next quarter.

Update 4 – She gave her carnatic vocal debut performance in an event named “Diwaleen” (Diwali+Halloween) organized by an arts company at our county. It was a super duper hit and she did an excellent job. For the past one month we have been practicing every day at home like waking up for “Shyamalae meenakshi” and going to bed with “Vara shiva baalam”.. Practice definitely makes miracle. She sounded so confident while performing at the show.

Here is the audio version

Shyamalae Meenakshi

Vara shiva balam

And this was her costume for the event with rainbow pattu pavadai  🙂

Update 5 – She had thanksgiving multicultural feast at school today. Her school is closing on Wednesday afternoon for thanksgiving this week. So this is going to be a long long weekend for her. I made the easy peasy coconut burfi and diamond biscuits for the feast. It didn’t turn out so well. I spent more time in adjusting the dough for biscuits and yesterday turned out to be a tedious day. For records we ate lunch at 4pm. Whatever I contributed something for the feast and few kids tasted it. That’s it.

Phewwww it looks like am done with the updates for the whole year..

Learning the art of Negotiation

from the little girlie at its best. The courses I attended at work for this soft skill sprang through the window as Adi is practically challenging me with this for anything and everything I want her to do. Anytime I ask request her highness to carry out some task she would say this with a whatever attitude “OK here is the deal” Let me clarify that by task I meant eating her dinner, drinking milk, cleaning up toys and finishing her homework and not anything related to helping me. Ok I agree that eating her food is a big help to me. Here goes the latest deal

Adi: Amma, we have a spelling test at school
Me: Wow !!! that’s great. Did your teacher ask you to prepare at home? May be I will ask appa to give you a surprise if you score full marks
Adi: Surprise? Ok then here is the deal
Me: (Squeezing my mind with what this time?)
Adi: If I score full marks appa can give me a big surprise and If I try my best appa can give me a little surprise.. ok?

how can I say no to this? Isn’t this a double-win situation for her? what is the limit for “trying her best”? From then on the talk at home was only about the options for the big and little surprise that we were about to forget the source for the surprise. She would have finished the test by now. It is not the matter of whether she is going to get the surprise or not it is the matter of whether it is big or little. We will get to know today evening… Phew I have a lot to learn from her…

It doesn’t stop with Negotiation yesterday evening we made vanilla color cup cakes as we were hibernating at home due to snow storm… While Adi was contemplating about what to say M said right on my face that it is sugary (No I am not blaming him I am happy as long as he says something when I ask him the nth time rather than being silent). All she said was “Mommy its not that I don’t like ’em but I don’t feel like eating it now”… Only when I promised her at bed time that I am asking so I can improve myself the next time and I will not feel bad about what she says she slowly said “You know mommy actually I didn’t like the cup cakes but I know that you tried your best..” Needless to say there was a lump in my throat and I hugged my sweat heart…
